By the time i picked this up, it was already a best seller and Mira Nair was planning a film with Amitabh Bachchan and Johnny Depp based on it. So my expectations were accordingly high. That perhaps explains my disappointment when i finished it. Not that it is a bad read, far from that. Parts of it are engaging. The philosophical discussions between two lead characters were interesting and written in exquisite prose. That would have earned an extra star if there was any new idea in there. But its all old wine in new, albeit attractive, bottle.I am not going to say much about the plot, but it is clearly targeted at a possible motion picture adaptation.Just another of those manipulative accounts of India, which westerners who have never been there or read much about, will find fascinating. Ah...and glad that movie with Johnny Depp never happened (yet!).
